At their Feb. 11 meeting, Selectmen unanimously approved a change in the LED sign at 502 Granite Ave. and an additional sign with six lights beneath on the west side of the building facing the expressway.
The LED sign will now read “SLEEPY’S” in red letters against a black background. A second sign on the building façade will display “SLEEPY’S,” in 20-inch red raised letters and, also, “The Mattress Professionals” in eight and one-half inch black letters on two lines.
Under the agreement, all lighting on both signs must be turned off at 11 p.m. each day. Planning Director Bill Clark presented the agreement which he said he’d negotiated with the president of Sleepy’s.
Selectmen acknowledged the controversy surrounding the building signage as the Sign Committee and numerous residents opposed both signs. At their meeting on Feb. 11 and at previous meetings, speakers urged the board to shut down the LED sign which glows in daylight and darkness.
“We value the input we got from the sign committee,” said Selectman Katie Conlon who said that committee works to advise the board but the final decisions lay only with Selectmen.
