Alfred J. Hall, 88, died at Milton Health Care Facility on Sept. 7.
A 10-year resident of Milton, he was formerly from Tuckahoe and Bronxville, N.Y., and Gibson Island, Md.
Mr. Hall, a retired Navy commander, attended Columbia University and then joined the Navy Reserve, beginning his 24-year naval career.
Intensively trained, he became a Navy carrier pilot. During World War II, he flew the F4F Wildcats and the F6F Hellcats off many carriers, including the Bennington and the Roosevelt. His last carrier was the Bismarck Sea, CVE95, which was sunk by two Japanese kamikazes on Feb. 21, 1945. Rescued after three hours in 12- to 15-foot waves by a U.S. destroyer, he returned to the United States.
He became commanding officer of two fighter squadrons, VC46 in Jacksonville, Fla., and VC43 in Oceana, Va. Mr. Hall also retired from Grumman Aerospace, in Huntington, N.Y., where he served as plant manager in manufacturing operations and was involved in the development of the F14 Tomcat and the Lunar Landing Modules. He then served as director of military sales for four years in Ottawa, Canada.
He pursued his love for sailing at Centerport Yacht Club in Long Island and also during his retirement at Gibson Island, Md. He served for two years as president of the Gibson Island Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy J. (Mahoney) “D.J.” Hall; his daughters, Dr. Deborah A. Hall, of Boston, and Katherine J. Hall, of Arlington, Va.; his sons-in-law, Dr. Robert C. Sarno and Terry E. Johnson; and his grandchildren, Nicholas H. Sarno, Jane S. Sarno and Benjamin R. Gurney.
A memorial Mass was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on Sept. 11. Burial was private.
