Anita J. deBenedictis

Anita J. deBenedictis, 92, of Milton, the matriarch of a noted South Shore family with longtime involvement in politics, the law and real estate, died May 16.

Mrs. deBenedictis was a 75-year resident of Milton. She and her husband maintained a summer home in North Scituate for many years and more recently spent summers in Nantucket at The Summer House Resort, which is owned by her daughter and her husband.

A graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Boston, she attended Lasalle Junior College in Newton. She was a longtime member of the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, the Wollaston Golf Club, the Women’s Italian Club, the Circolo Letterario Italiano and The Inner Circle of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts.

Mrs. deBenedictis was treasurer of her daughter Danielle deBenedictis’ campaign for Congress in 1976. Subsequently, she became a real estate broker with DeWolfe and Co. at its Milton office, where she worked until her retirement. She was repeatedly a member of DeWolfe’s Million Dollar Club and was beloved by her clients and fellow workers.

She was a daily communicant at St. Agatha Church where she and her husband, then a decorated World War II Marine major, were married in 1945. She later moved to St. Elizabeth’s Parish where she continued to be involved until her illness.

Mrs. deBenedictis is survived by her husband of 66 years, attorney Daniel J. deBenedictis, who was a prominent real estate attorney and author of “The Complete Real Estate Advisor” before he retired from the private practice of law and headed the Consumer Protection Division of the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office under William Delahunt and William Keating; her children, attorney Danielle E. deBenedictis, of Milton, Nantucket, and Palm Beach, Fla., a former assistant attorney general under both Robert Quinn and Francis Bellotti, and attorney Louis C. deBenedictis, of Milton, a former assistant attorney general under William Delahunt; her children’s spouses, Peter Karlson and Diep deBenedictis; her sister, Elizabeth P. Sgarlat; her niece and goddaughter, Mary Anne S. Baumgartner and her husband, Michael, of Milton; her grandchildren, Francesca Karlson and Christopher Karlson, of Milton and Palm Beach, and Daniel deBenedictis, Grace deBenedictis and Matthew deBenedictis, of Milton; and her great-grandchildren, Andre Karlson, of Palm Beach, and M.G. Karlson, of Milton.

She was the sister of the late renowned journalist and photographer Luis Marden, chief of the foreign editorial staff at National Geographic.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Elizabeth’s Church on May 20. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
