David Weinz

David Weinz died June 23 at his home in Milton.

Born on July 11, 1933, in Milton, he was the son of the late Willis H. Weinz and Lena M. (Center) Weinz.

Mr. Weinz was an artist who designed type faces professionally years ago. He had a degree in fine arts from the Massachusetts College of Art. Throughout his life he enjoyed working in paint, pastels, pencil and sculpting.

A loving and devoted son, he lived with and cared for his mother throughout her elder years until she died at the age of 104. He loved to be near the seaside, which inspired much of his work. He spent many years in his summer home on Cape Cod, before selling it to purchase a house in Steuben, Maine.

He loved all things old and historical, always keeping an eye out for genuine native American Indian arrow heads and other treasures.

One year, for Christmas, he gave his relatives each a copy of a genealogical notebook that contained parts of his parents’ family trees. In the introduction, he wrote, “Here’s something fun: In the 1880s, best I can gather, someone in our family belonged to the Mayflower Society. Only Mayflower descendants can do this. In all probability, the name was Cook. This name is in Mother’s line as well as Dad’s. Who knows?”

Brother of the late Dorothy (Weinz) Kano, he is survived by his nieces, Jennifer Kano, Becky (Kano) Kinney and Susan Kano; and his nephew, David Kano.

A celebration of his life with an exhibit of his artwork will be held in Wayland on Oct. 16 for family and friends. Call Susan at (508) 358-9611.
