Dorothy W. Sweeney

Dorothy W. (McElhiney) Sweeney, 88, of Milton and Naples, Fla., died Aug. 19.
She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army as a nurse.
Born in Woburn, she was a graduate of St. John’s Nursing School in Lowell.
She was involved with hospitals in the area over the years. She was a longtime member of Wollaston Golf Club.
She was the former wife of the late Maj. Gen. Charles W. Sweeney, U.S.A.F., who was the man who dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki.
She was the mother of 10 children and is survived by Patricia and Ed O’Neill, of Cheshire, Conn.; Marylyn and Brian Howe, of Marshfield Hills; Charles W. Sweeney Jr., of California; M. Carol Sweeney-Boyd and her husband, Charles, of Milton; Terence and Diane Sweeney, of Arizona; Rosemary and Tom Gunning, of Norwell; Elizabeth Sweeney, of Cape Cod; Joseph and Meg Sweeney, of Milton, Bonnie Sweeney and Paul Barnicle, of Boston; her sister, Mary Brown, and brother, William McElhiney, both of Woburn. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Joan Sweeney and Michele Saulnier and the sister of late Leo McElhiney, James McElhiney and Joseph McElhiney and Patricia Riel.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Agatha Church on Aug. 25. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
