Dr. John C. Trakas of Milton, South Yarmouth, and Hutchinson Island, Fla., died June 6.
A retired surgeon, he was former chief of the ENT Department at Children’s Hospital, Boston, and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Brighton. He also worked on staff at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, V.A. Medical Center, Boston, and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., prior to his retirement.
Dr. Trakas was also a retired faculty member of Harvard Medical School.
He was a graduate of Boston Latin School, Harvard College and Harvard Medical School.
He was a 50-year member of the Harvard Club of Boston, former president of the Brookline Lions Club and former treasurer of the Arahova Society of New England.
An Army veteran of World War II, he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. A unit surgeon for the 9th Army Armored Division, he was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and multiple distinguished citations, campaign medals and battle ribbons for combat service in the European Theater of Operation in the Ardennes Offensive, Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Bastogne and Battle of Remagen.
He is survived by his wife, Anne (Poulos) Trakas; his children, Christopher J. Trakas, CPA, of Milton, Nicholas J. Trakas and his wife, Barbara, of Westwood, and Jennifer M. Trakas-Acerra and her husband, Stephen M. Acerra Jr., Esq., of Milton; his grandchildren, John Trakas and Elizabeth Trakas, of Westwood; his sister, Mary Karres of Charlotte, N.C.; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Patricia Trakas and Mimi Tingus.
A funeral service was held in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England, Boston, on June 16. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
