Edward F. Saunders, 60, died Aug. 28 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
Son of the late Edward F. and Ellen M. (Nolan) Saunders, he was born in Dorchester and raised in Roslindale. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School in Roslindale and graduated from Boston College High School in 1967.
Mr. Saunders earned his bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1971 and was awarded his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 1974. He was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar Association in 1975 and the Federal District Court of Massachusetts, 1st Circuit Court of Appeals and U.S. Supreme Court in 1979.
He lived in Roslindale until 15 years ago when he sold the family home and moved to Marina Bay in Quincy. A summer resident of Falmouth for over 35 years, he loved the beach and Cape Cod lifestyle.
He was executive director of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, the public policy office of the Catholic Church in Massachusetts. Appointed by the board of governors that includes the archbishop of Boston, and the bishops of the dioceses of Fall River, Springfield and Worcester, he began his position July 25, 2005.
Mr. Saunders had extensive experience in the public policy and legislative arenas. For the past 16 years, he served as senior vice president and legislative counsel for the Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island credit union leagues, and as the general counsel and clerk of the Credit Union League of Massachusetts. For nearly a decade, he was resident counsel for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. He served as an attorney for the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1977 and previously practiced law in the Boston area.
He was active in a number of organizations and public causes, including the establishment of the Robert F. Saunders ’35 and Edward F. Saunders ’35 Scholarship at BC High. His cousin, the late Rev. John A. Saunders, a priest with the archdiocese for more than 60 years, co-founded the scholarship.
A loyal fan of BC sports, most notably for his longtime season-ticket holdings in both football and basketball, he was well known throughout the BC community for his football tailgates and his organizational ability for trips to out of town games. He especially loved to travel to BC football games at Notre Dame, Miami and Army.
Mr. Saunders traveled annually to Florida, and loved to stay at the Largo Mar to catch up with his friends from Chicago and other parts of the country whom he had met while attending BC football games and through business.
He is survived by his sister, former Milton resident Ellen McCarthy and her husband, Richard, of Falmouth; his niece, Elizabeth (McCarthy) Cardiasmenos and her husband, Timothy, of Quincy; his nephew, Michael S. McCarthy, of Washington, D.C.; and great-niece, Claire S. Cardiasmenos, of Quincy; and his aunt, Agnes Saunders, of Dorchester.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Aug. 31 in St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, Chestnut Hill. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Falmouth.
