Edward P. Collins

Edward P. “Red” Collins Sr., 89, died Sept. 13.
He was a resident of East Milton for 54 years.
Mr. Collins was raised in Dorchester and graduated from St. Peter’s Grammar School and Boston College High School. He planned to attend law school but in 1942 joined the Army Air Corps. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the southwest Pacific theater, Australia and India.
Mr. Collins was employed by the MBTA for 39 years and retired in 1981 as superintendent of the surface lines.
After retirement, Mr. Collins traveled extensively with his wife. He followed Boston College football and the Boston Red Sox. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and drove patients to doctors and hospital appointments.
He was a former member of the St. Agatha’s Church Couples Club. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sports and school activities.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor B. (Sullivan-Barrett) Collins; his children, Mary C. Lowney and her husband, Richard, of Weymouth, Theresa A. Collins and her husband, Christopher Coughlan, of San Francisco, Francis X. Collins and his wife, Maryjane, of Milton, Edward P. Collins Jr., of Walpole, Allyson Powell, of Dighton, Daniel J. Barrett and his wife, Maureen, of Ashfield, Louise C. Collins and Sean Connolly, of Attleboro; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was the husband of the late Catherine Z. (Nagle) Collins, father of the late Anne M. Barrett, son of the late Mary A. (Murphy) Collins and Patrick J. Collins, and brother of the late Gordon F. “Bud” Freeman.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in
St. Agatha Church on Sept. 18. Burial was in
Milton Cemetery.
