Emily Wheeler Ayre, a guidance counselor at Pierce Middle School, died at her home in South Boston on Aug. 11.

Born May 28, 1984, she was the daughter of Jonathan and Nancy Ayre of Woodbury, Conn.

She attended the Woodbury public schools. While at Mitchell Elementary School, she was designated a Presidential Scholar. She was a member of the first middle school girls’ soccer team, which was undefeated during the years she played. She earned several awards for her academic achievements and outstanding character at Woodbury Middle School and Nonnewaug High School.

She played varsity soccer for four years at Nonnewaug High. Her team meant the world to her.

While in high school, she was a Berkshire League All-Star in both soccer and tennis. Her years at Boston College included some of her most special memories.

Miss Ayre graduated from Boston College with a bachelor’s degree in communications and English, and a master’s degree in guidance/counseling and education. She had worked at Pierce for the past two years.

She attended Camp Woodstock in Woodstock Valley, Conn., for 11 summers. She started as a camper and over the years was a counselor, a waterfront director, and an LIT director.

She will be remembered for her love of books, dogs, Boston sports, the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team and Boston College, as well as her ability to create with words, and her loyalty to her friends and her family, especially her sisters.

She is also survived by her sisters, Amanda and Abigail; her grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. A. Russell Ayre, of Woodbury, and Village of Golf, Fla., her boyfriend, Brian Cote, and their dog, Dover; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was the granddaughter of the late Edgar and Harriette Redington.

A memorial service was held Aug. 17 in First Congregational Church, New Milford, Conn.
