Enid Chapman

Enid (Whyte) Chapman, 79, of Milton and Chatham, died at home Jan. 18.

Born in Pawtucket, R.I., on June 23, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm Campbell Whyte and Dorothy Andrew Whyte. She graduated from Rhode Island’s Cumberland High School, studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and went on to earn her R.N. degree from the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston.

After graduating from nursing school, she worked at Massachusetts General Hospital where she met and married the late Dr. Richard Blair Chapman. In 1959 they moved to Milton where they raised seven children. They spent their summers in Chatham.

She remained active with boards, volunteer political positions, health care interests, civic committees and charitable groups.

She was a member of First Parish Unitarian Church in Milton, and the boards of both the Swift Martin Fund and The Boston Home in Dorchester. She was active with the Milton Visiting Nurses, Milton Public Library, Milton Council on Aging and Milton Community Food Pantry while still finding the time to work at the University of Massachusetts Boston Gerentology Program where she received a certification degree.

Her interests included her family, friends, gardening, gourmet cooking, needlepoint, international travel, fly fishing, global politics, and The New York Times’ crossword puzzle.

She was a voracious reader and a member of many book groups.

Mrs. Chapman was equally comfortable at home in the Boston area; the back woods of northern Maine, with a fly rod in hand; or on a boat in Pleasant Bay, in Chatham off the Cape. She lived life to the fullest. Her grace, generous spirit and steadfast friendship will be missed.

She is survived by her children, Richard, Kathleen, William, Anne, Edmund, Andrew and John; three daughters-in-law, Laurie, Diana and Julia; a son-in-law, Rob; and five grandsons, Wyatt, Dylan, Blair, Alec and Banner; and two brothers, Rollin Whyte and Donald Whyte.

A memorial service was held in First Parish Church on Jan. 28. Private burial was in Milton Cemetery.

Donations may be made to The Milton Residents Fund c/o First Parish, 535 Canton Ave., Milton, MA 02186 or to charity.

Arrangements were by the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home.
