F. Fred Bortolotti, 88, formerly of Milton, died Oct. 21 at the Radius Health facility located at Quincy Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Milton, he graduated from Milton High School in 1942, where he was a star athlete and still holds the single season batting average record of .537. He was inducted into the Milton High Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, a highlight achievement of his later years. He played in the Boston Red Sox’s and Pittsburgh Pirates’ minor league organizations for four years following his military service.

Mr. Bortolotti took tremendous pride in being a member of “the greatest generation” and serving his country. He served in the 1st Division Marine Corp. and saw heavy combat in the South Pacific Theater.

He was co-owner of the family plastering business F.F. Bortolotti, in Milton, before his early retirement due to health reasons.

He will be remembered for his strong resolve and fierce independence. The family would like to thank the Hancock Park Adult Day Health and the Veterans Administration for their caring support. Mr. Bortolotti also received the utmost care from the compassionate staff at Quincy Medical Center and Radius Health.

Husband of the late Barbara R. (Shephard) Bortolotti, he is survived by his children, Alfred Bortolotti and his wife Jeane, of Hanover, Catherine Simisky and her husband, Edward, of Shrewsbury, Sharon Bjorkman and her husband, Philip, of Marshfield, Barbara Connick and her husband, Paul, of Hull, Dale Bortolotti, of Hyde Park, and Frederick Bortolotti, of Hull; his grandchildren, Michaelyn, Corinne, Philip, Jarrett, Jenette, Christopher, Kevin, Michaela, Neil and Erin; and his siblings, Gloria DelPico, of Braintree, Harold Bortolotti, of Milton, and Karen Lorusso, of Hanover.

He was the son of the late Fedele Bortolotti and Catherine (Noris) Bortolotti, father of the late Lauri Bortolotti, and brother of the late Warren Bortolotti.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Agatha Church on Oct. 26. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.

Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 505 N. Parkway, Memphis, TN 38103.

Arrangements were by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.
