Francis E. Kelly Jr., 70, died at his home in Quincy on May 20.
Mr. Kelly was a retired probation officer of Dorchester District Court.
Born in Cambridge, he spent many years at the family homes in Dorchester and in Hull.
He attended St. Gregory’s Grammar School in Dorchester and then St. John’s Preparatory School, and received his undergraduate degree from Boston College. He later earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from Suffolk University Law School.
For many years until his retirement in 2009, Mr. Kelly was an assistant in the probation office of Dorchester District Court, where he was noted for his cheerful disposition and his hard work.
He is survived by his companion of many years, Mary O’Donnell, also of Quincy; his sister Marion K. Daley, of Needham; three nieces; and a nephew.
He was the son of the late Massachusetts Attorney General Francis E. Kelly and Marion G. Kelly.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. John the Baptist Church, Quincy, on May 25. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
Arrangements were by the Dolan Funeral Home.
