Grace M. “Gar” (Smith) White, of Holbrook, died May 29 at the Groton home of her daughter Karen after a brief illness.
Born in Milton on April 20, 1923, the daughter of the late Felix X. Smith and Grace M. (Cavanagh) Smith, she was the youngest of four children. Her siblings were the late Felix “Mac” Smith, Ann Dodge and Virginia Alexander.
She relocated to Brighton and was a longtime executive secretary at the law firm of Bingham, Dana & Gould.
A single mother, she raised her three daughters Bonnie Rose, Karen Kane and Margaret Richardson with pride. She put them all through St. Columbkille’s Parochial School. She was an accomplished seamstress, photographer and organist.
Mrs. White remained committed to music improvement without interruption. She took pride in her active lifestyle, as a constant user of her local health club and a frequent traveler to destinations around the globe. She set the bar high for all of her peers.
A graduate of Massasoit Community College, she received her associate’s degree at age 71.
Her humor and love will be missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her daughters, she is survived by seven grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, four nephews and two nieces.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Parish worshipping in St. James Church, Groton, on June 4. Burial was in Groton Cemetery.
