Henry Louis Melanson, 86, of Dorchester, N.H., formerly of Milton, died July 7 after a period of failing health.

A graduate of Milton High School and Boston College, he served in the South Pacific with the Navy in World War II. He was the owner of Melanson and Sons Steam Fitting and Heating Contracting Co., plant manager for Chelsea Industries, professional ski instructor at Tenney Mountain and Waterville Valley, and town moderator of Dorchester for 23 years. He was an officer of the Holy Name Society, Fontbonne Father’s Club, St. Mary of the Hills Guild, Bishop Regan Club, Worthy Master of the Dorchester Grange and a friend of the Boy and Girl Scouts.

A loving father and grandfather, he enjoyed working in his tool shop, making “Mighty Fine” cultivators, haying his fields, skiing, gardening and bird watching.

Husband of the late Alice Krim, he is survived by his daughters Joan and her husband Daniel Lewis, of Milton, MaryLou and her husband Dennis Sears, of Salem, N.H., Elizabeth “Lisa” of Preston, Conn., Anne and her husband Adrian Payne, of Lucan, Ireland, Kathleen and her husband Bjorn Carlsson, of Narragansett, R.I.; his grandchildren Christine, fiancé Thom Horton, Mark, his wife Suzanne, Theresa Lewis, Jonathan Sears, his fiancé Ashley Klingler and Natalie Sears, Shaun Harrington, Ryan Harrington, Dylan Payne and Sebastian Carlsson; great-grandchildren Andrew Lewis and Allison Lewis; friends including Margaret Krim and John Morrissey; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Celeste Morse and William Melanson. His son-in-law was the late Richard Harrington.

His body was donated to Tufts Medical School.

A memorial was held in New Hampshire in July and a memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Hills Church on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m.
