Hugh Joseph Sweeney, 88, died Nov. 5.

Born in Boston, he was a 50-year resident of Westwood prior to his move to Quincy five years ago. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a 1953 graduate of Boston College.

Mr. Sweeney was a retired government physicist at Hanscom Field in Bedford. He held five patents in his name for work he had invented.

He was a member of the Boston College Alumnae Association and the Medfield American Legion Post #110.

Husband of the late M. Gloria (Purtell) Sweeney, he is survived by his children, Hugh J. Sweeney Jr. and his wife, Dianne, of Vermont, Jane C. Sweeney and Michael A. Sweeney, both of Quincy, Eileen M. Howell and her husband, David, of Stoughton, and Anne F. Pinkham, of Hull; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and his sister, Mary R. Sweeney, of Newton.

He was the brother of the late John Sweeney.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Church, Quincy, on Nov. 9. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.

Arrangements were by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.
