Hugh T. Putnam Jr.

Hugh T. Putnam Jr., 68, of Milton, died Sept. 30, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Boston, he graduated from the Groton School in 1959 and from Harvard University in 1963. He then enrolled in the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University before working for 29 years for the New England Forestry Foundation.
Mr. Putnam served as executive director for the New England Forestry Foundation for eight years. He later founded his own Milton-based business, Putnam Forestry Services, which he operated until his retirement in 2005.
In his spare time, he served as the recording secretary for the Milton Hoosic Club, was chairman of the Massachusetts Tree Farm Association, and sang four days a week with St. Michael’s Church, Dedham Choral Society, his own barbershop quartet and the Canton Bay Statesmen.
His hobbies involved model trains and train photography.
He is survived by his wife, Heather (McCusker) Putnam; his children, Hugh T. Putnam III and his wife, Virginia, of Milton, and Robin A. Putnam, of Milton; his grandchildren, Caroline and Sophia Putnam; his sisters, Anne Putnam Nichols and her husband, Louis, of Sherborn, and Mary Putnam Mitchell and her husband, Ned, of Groton; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 112 Randolph Ave., on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. Upon Mr. Putnam’s request, those attending the service are asked not to wear all black. A reception will follow at the Straus Library in Milton Academy.
