James E. O’Neill, 82, of Milton and Cotuit, formerly of Stoughton, died Dec. 22.

A 1946 graduate of Boston Latin School, he was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Boston College in 1951.

He was a pioneer in the computer industry since 1957 and led technology organizations for Honeywell, GTE and Raytheon.

Mr. O’Neill was the past commander of American Legion Post #89 and a member of VFW Post #1645 in Stoughton.

He was a past president of Stoughton Little League and of the Stoughton Youth Athletic Club where, during his tenure, he focused on the enhancement of sports programs for girls.

He was a veteran of the Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, during the Korean War.

Since the death of his wife, he had immersed himself in genealogy and was proud to have more than 5,000 members of his family tree identified.

Husband of the late Barbara A. (Foley) O’Neill, he is survived by his children, Barbara LaSalle and her husband, Rick, of Cumberland, R.I., Mary Sabin and her husband, Jim, of Milton, Jim O’Neill and his wife, Kathy, of Ashburn, Va., Mark O’Neill and his wife, Jane, of Bridgewater, Jeanne Lieb and her husband, George, of East Greenwich, R.I., and Karen Cicchetti and her husband, Larry, of Mansfield; 12 grandchildren, Justin, Matt, Mike, J.J., Kelly, Katie, Anthony, Patrick, Jimmy, Marissa, Ashley and Kevin; and his sister, Joan Flynn, of Hyde Park.

He was the brother of the late Jack O’Neill.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on Dec. 27. Burial was in National Cemetery, Bourne.

Arrangements were by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.
