James J. Hooley, Jr.

James J. Hooley Jr., 97, noted water colorist, art instructor, and World War II Army Air Corps veteran, died Oct. 23 at the German Home in West Roxbury.

He was born and raised in Boston.

Mr. Hooley was a printer for the Buck Printing Co. in Boston. He retired at age 62 in 1975 to devote more time to his painting and teaching.

He loved painting and was self-taught from his early childhood, and won acclaim for his work dealing with a far range of subjects. His favorite works dealt with the Boston Public Garden, swan boats, Boston Transit Elevator structures, Boston Harbor, landscapes, portraits and still-lifes.

He also taught budding artists at his summer workshops in Ogunquit, Maine, as well as Fuller Village and the Council on Aging. He donated many of his works to various charitable organizations and fund-raisers.

A veteran of World War II, he served as a radioman in the 517th Signal Corp and was assigned to a glider company. Mr. Hooley participated in the Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.

Husband of the late Anna E. (Maher) Hooley, he is survived by his sister, Eleanor M. Ford, of Milton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Walter E. Hooley, Robert F. Hooley and Lillian M. Hooley.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. Elizabeth’s Church, 350 Reedsdale Road, on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. There were no visiting hours and burial was private.
