James P. McGettrick died at home June 21 after a lengthy illness.
Born in Boston, he grew up in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester and lived there until his move to Milton nearly 50 years ago.
The owner of the Beachcomber at Wollaston Beach, Mr. McGettrick was a 1955 graduate of Suffolk University, an Army veteran and an auctioneer.
Husband of the late Rose W. (Morris) McGettrick and son of the late Patrick McGettrick and Mary (Brady) McGettrick, originally from County Sligo, Ireland, he is survived by his children, Michelle Holland and her husband, Joseph, of Braintree, James P. McGettrick Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Weymouth, Sean McGettrick and his wife, Julie, of Milton, and Patrick G. McGettrick his wife, Erin, of Marshfield, “the love of his life,” Suzanne M. Elsmore, of Milton; his brother, John McGettrick and his wife, Carleen, of Bedford; his sister, Ann Donoghue and her husband, James, of Hyde Park; and 11 grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Patricia McGettrick and Michael McGettrick.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Gregory Church, Dorchester, on June 24. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
