Jane D. Herbert

Jane D. Herbert, 77, a 30-year resident of Milton, died Feb. 25 after a lengthy illness.
Born on June 21, 1932, in Windber, Pa., she graduated from Vassar College in 1954 with honors in political science.
That same year, she married J. Kingston Herbert Jr., with whom she had three sons and enjoyed a 40-year marriage until his death in 1994.
Mrs. Herbert was an avid gardener and a member of the Milton Garden Club. She also served on the Ladies Committee of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In addition, she served on the vestry and other committees of St. Michael’s Church, which she attended with her husband since moving to Milton in 1975.
Her superb landscaping and flower arrangements were two of the many things friends and family remember about her.
An accomplished athlete, she loved to compete in racquet sports and golf. She also enjoyed sailing and the outdoors, and took great pleasure in visiting Squam Lake in New Hampshire with her extended family, including her dogs. An elegant and caring woman who loved to laugh, Mrs. Herbert was a devoted mother and grandmother, and in later years especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her three sons, J. Kingston Herbert III and his wife, Elizabeth, of Boston, James D. Herbert and his wife, Anke, of Milton, and Timothy H. Herbert and his wife, Burkely, of Houston; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor G. Oliver, of Sewickley, Pa.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 20, at 11 a.m. in St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 112 Randolph Ave. Burial was private.
