John F. Doherty Sr. died at the Irish Manor, Braintree, on Sept. 20.
Born in Boston, he resided in Dorchester and Milton before his move to Quincy over 50 years ago. He was a graduate of English High School, Boston.
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Doherty was a service instructor at Boston Gas Co. for 43 years before his retirement in 1982.
He is survived by his wife, Claire M. (Hart) Doherty; his children, John F. “Jack” Doherty Jr., of Easton, Frederick “Fred” Doherty, of Centerville, Sheila Suggs, of Amesbury, and Barbara Newton, of Newton; his brother, William Doherty, of Quincy; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Anna Flaherty, May Majeski and Helen Stevens.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Joseph Church, Quincy, on Sept. 23. Burial was in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
