John F. O’Faherty, 82, of Milton, died Aug. 28 at the Alliance Nursing Home in Braintree.
Born in Boston, he graduated from the Boston school system. He then joined the Army and served in Alaska.
He and his friend, John Wallace, entered a longtime partnership owning Boston taverns, package stores, Quincy Dairy Freeze, and the Barbers Crossing Restaurant in Worcester.
Mr. O’Faherty was an avid golfer and belonged to the Wollaston Golf Club in Milton for more than 50 years. He won many Fallon Cup Championships, and many other club championships. A well-respected amateur golfer, he was known throughout the south shore area.
Son of the late Martin and Julia (Riordon) Faherty, he is survived by his brother-in-law, Tarmo N. Holma, of Milton; and his nephews, John T. Holma, of Dover, N.H., and Eric M. Holma, of Quincy.
He was the brother of the late Peter Faherty, Sister St. Julie, Sister E. Ann Faherty and Catherine Holma.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Mary of the Hills Church on Sept. 1. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
