John H. Marlow, 88, of Providence, R.I., formerly of Boston and Milton, died May 10.
Born in London, he served in the Royal Artillery in World War II.
After teaching at Birmingham College of Art and serving as deputy principal, Mr. Marlow was invited to the United States in 1971 as a visiting professor of art education at the University of Iowa. Later he became a U.S. citizen and taught art in colleges and high schools in Massachusetts, retiring in 1992.
He began his artistic career as a sculptor. Mr. Marlow later turned to painting tall ships and landscapes, and restoring antiques.
He is survived by his wife, Wendy Ingram; his children, Jason Marlow, of Canada, Jonathan Marlow, of England, Jeremy Marlow of Iowa, and Julian Marlow, of Canada; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A celebration of his life will be held in Providence at the end of May.
