Joseph F. Fidler Jr.

Joseph F. Fidler Jr., 82, a retired trial attorney, died at Tufts Medical Center in Boston on Dec. 21.

Born in Boston, he was raised in Quincy. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1946, Holy Cross College in 1950 and Harvard Law School in 1956.

Mr. Fidler served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

A trial attorney for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. for 34 years, he retired in 1990 as assistant New England division general attorney.

He was a former member of the American Bar Association, Boston Bar Association and Massachusetts Bar Association. Mr. Fidler was a board member of the “Life After Liberty” retirees volunteer group and a member of the Liberty Mutual Quarter Century Club.

A 50-year resident of Milton, he was a member of St. Agatha Church where he was involved in the Pre-Cana program for 12 years and a Eucharistic minister at Quincy Medical Center.

Mr. Fidler enjoyed playing tennis and was a former member of the Braintree, Quincy and Weymouth tennis clubs. He was a former member of the Cunningham Men’s Bowling League in Milton.

An avid biker, his trips included New England, Canada, Florida and six bike tours of Europe. He traveled extensively in all of Europe, Israel and Turkey, enjoying London and 24 trips to Bermuda.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Fidler; his children, Jack Fidler and his wife, Jo-Louise Allen, of Newton, Mark Fidler and his wife, Tobey, of Waltham, Anne Ancona and her husband, Jim, of Boylston, and Katherine Dowd and her husband, Michael, of Sharon; his grandchildren, Thomas Ancona, Mark Ancona, Bailey Fidler, Leland Fidler, Ross Fidler, Daniel Fidler, Sam Fidler, Aviva Fidler, Matthew Dowd and Maggie Dowd; and his sister, Patricia Chiavaroli, of Milton.

He was the brother of the late Mary Fidler.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Agatha Church on Dec. 28. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
