Joseph G. Murphy, 86, of Milton, died at home Sept. 27.

Born and raised in Jamaica Plain, he was a graduate of Boston Latin High School, the University of Virginia and Boston University Law School. He participated in the V-12 program at the University of Virginia and served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Murphy was an attorney before retiring in 1988 as deputy general counsel for the MBTA, where he worked for 23 years.

A voracious reader and faithful Boston sports fan, he was an avid photographer and loved to play golf.

Husband of the late Mary Teresa (Keaney) Murphy, he is survived by his children, Mark F. Murphy and his wife, Patricia, of Wellesley, Marybeth Pepin and her husband, Stephen, of Milton, and Brian P. Murphy and his wife, Katherine, of Cambridge; his daughter-in-law, Mary (Walsh) Murphy, of Milton; his grandchildren, Maura T. Murphy, of Boston, Christopher S. Pepin, of Vermont, Erin E. Pepin, of Washington, D.C., Molly K. Murphy and Joseph C. Murphy, of Cambridge; his sister, Alice Thavis, of Minnesota; and his in-laws, Patricia A. Keaney, of Milton, Francis M. “Frank” Keaney, of Florida, Margaret Keaney, of Yarmouthport, Edna Murphy, of Texas, Richard Thavis, of Minnesota, and Joan Murphy, of New York.

He was the father of the late Joseph G. Murphy Jr., and brother of the late John F. Murphy and Robert A. Murphy.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on Oct. 1. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
