Joseph J. Finnell Jr., 81, of Milton, died at South Shore Hospital on July 5.

Born in Boston on July 25, 1929, to Alida and Joseph J. Finnell Sr., he served in the Navy and married his high school sweetheart.

Mr. Finnell worked many years at The Boston Globe but decided he wanted to start his own business. Together he and his wife built a family business consisting of commercial and residential properties. Finnell

Properties hasbeen in business for more than 45 years and has included four generations of family members.

A passionate golfer, he was a member of Wollaston Golf Club in Milton and Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla.

He was also passionate about tennis, so much so that he built the Weymouth Tennis Club, and traveled to watch the U.S. Open and Wimbledon tennis championships more than 25 times.

His other loves including biking, walking, spending time with his family, and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Mildred E. (Sullivan) Finnell; his children, Jack Finnell and his wife, Karen, of Maryland, Bill Finnell, Mike Finnell and his wife, Mary Ellen, Lyn Finnell, and Kathy Sullivan and her husband, Jon, all of Milton; his grandchildren, Katie, Matthew, Ally, Kirsten, Billy, Michaela, Kassy, Abby and Brenden; his great-grandchild, McKenzie; his brothers, Robert Finnell Sr., of Hull, and James Finnell, of Norwood; his sisters, Jean Hoffman, of Lynn, and Joan Savia, of Lynn; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Dorothy Finnell, Louise Cardillo, William Finnell and Lorraine Finnell, and the father-in-law of the late Michaela Finnell.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on July 11. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.

Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
