Joseph P. “Jay” Cunningham died at his home June 10.
Born in Boston, he grew up in Dorchester and lived there until his move to Milton 40 years ago. A decorated Navy veteran, he served in Vietnam in the Seabees and was the recipient of a Bronze Star.
Mr. Cunningham was a retired Merchant Marine. He formerly worked as a commercial fisherman at Boston Fish Pier and was a longtime member of the Milton Yaz Softball League and the Quincy Elks Lodge # 943.
Son of the late Thomas J. Cunningham and Mary E. (McClain) Cunningham, he is survived by his sisters, Marie D. Dufour, of Tewksbury, and Nancy E. Bulger, of Milton; his brother, Thomas F. Cunningham, of Dorchester; four nieces and nephews; and a great-nephew.
He was the brother of the late Pfc. Robert J. Cunningham, U.S.M.C.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Agatha Church on June 15. Burial was in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
