Leslie Goyer McCabe

Leslie Goyer McCabe, 90, of Milton, died Nov. 10 at home.

Born on Sept. 7, 1920, in Belfast, Ireland, to Thomas A. McCabe and Mary (Breidon) McCabe, he came to Boston in 1926. He earned his Boy Scout Eagle Award, graduated from Somerville High School and attended Franklin Union Institute.

During World War II, as an Army lieutenant in the Signal Corps, attached to the Strategic Air Command, he served 22 months of active duty in the Gilbert, Marshal and Marianna Islands. He was the officer in charge of the signal command post and personally ensured the coded message that the Enola Gay had dropped the bomb on Hiroshima was sent to the Pentagon.

On Saipan, he was injured by a Japanese grenade. He received the Purple Heart and earned three campaign stars.

Upon his discharge from the Army, Les married in Florida before he moved to Milton. He worked at New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. He retired from the company after 45 years of service as plant service manager.

Mr. McCabe was active in the First Baptist Church of Milton, Furnace Brook Golf Club, Buckaroo Square Dance Club, Milton Lawn Bowling and the Rotary Club.

Husband of the late Edith A. (Jones) McCabe, he is survived by his daughter, Marion Deware, of Utah; his grandchildren, Laura Deware-Jones and David Deware, both of Kansas, Allan W. Deware, of Honduras, and two great-grandchildren.

He was the father of the late Joyce E. McCabe and brother of the late Harold McCabe.

A funeral service was held in the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home on Nov. 22. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
