Leslie Pamela Roitman, 56, one of the South Shore’s most respected artists, died in her Milton home on May 2 after a four-year battle with breast cancer.
A graduate of Brookline High School, she received both her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics and her M.F.A. in print making from the State University of New York at New Paltz.
She taught at Mount Ida College and Roger Williams College.
Ms. Roitman participated in group shows in New York, Boston and in Provincetown, where she summered. She exhibited art in private gardens, the store windows of Tiffany
Jewelers, local restaurants such as Isabella’s in Dedham, and the Milton Public Library.
Working in a wide variety of materials and styles in her Milton studio, she used many mediums, producing a large body of multimedia collages, acrylics, clay masks and clay scratch board tableaux that were widely collected.
She was also the devoted companion-owner of two horses now at Horseplay Stables in Milton.
Dozens of well-wishers attended a 30th birthday party there for her horse, Emma, a few weeks ago,
in what turned out to be one of Ms. Roitman’s last public appearances.
Ms. Roitman also had a singular reputation for kindness to both people and animals. Because she was so vital and uncomplaining, her death shocked and surprised her many friends.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Tamkin; her sister, Melanie Roitman Stracuzzi, of Clifton Park, N.Y., her in-laws, Sheila Simons and Len Simons of Sharon, Gardy Tamkin and Barbara Tamkin, of Nashville, Tenn., and Lawrence and Simone Tamkin of Austin; her nephews and nieces, Joseph, Simons, Eli Simons, Gabriela Rose-Tamkin, Kaniel Rose-Tamkin, Alexander Tamkin, Aaron Tamkin, Jacob Tamkin, Zachary Tamkin and Noah Stracuzzi; other family members, close friends; horses, dogs and cats.
She was the daughter of the late Edna Hamburg and George Roitman.
Memorial services were held in the Stanetsky Funeral Home, Canton. Burial was May 5 in Sharon.
