Martin DeMatteo Jr. died March 3.
Born in Boston, he was a former resident of Wellesley and Milton, and had lived in Hingham for the past 17 years.
Mr. DeMatteo was the retired president and CEO of M. DeMatteo Construction Co., Quincy, a position he held for more than 40 years in one of the largest and most successful companies of its kind in New England.
He was the founder and signer of the charter and director of the City Bank & Trust Co., Boston. In addition, he was the founder and developer of Saugus-based Refuse to Energy Systems Co., or RESCO, the first commercially successful enterprise of its kind in the United States, and the founder, developer and operator of Green Mountain Park, the first successful pari-mutual establishment in Vermont.
He was a late member of the Knights of Malta, a former member of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Co. of Massachusetts, a member of the board of directors of the Don Orione Home in East Boston, a member of the Knights of Don Orione, active in Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston, a life member of the Hundred Club of Massachusetts. and a late member of the Neighborhood Club of Quincy.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rose (Tomasello) DeMatteo, of Hingham; his children, Marty DeMatteo, Duchie Murphy and her husband, Philip, all of Hingham, and Claire Taylor and her husband, Richard, of Maryland; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late John DeMatteo, Mildred Sardella and Pasquelina Centofanti.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Church, Hingham, on March 6. Burial was private.
