Mary Catherine (Maguire) Tierney, 78, of Milton, died in her home Nov. 20 of advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Born in Brockton on Aug. 27, 1932, to William and Lucy Josephine (Connolly) Maguire, she was raised in South Boston.
She was vice president of South Boston High School’s class of 1952.
She married William J. Tierney, former chief justice of the Boston Municipal Court, on June 29, 1957, and was his wife for 53 years. After their marriage, Mrs. Tierney moved to Milton with her husband and family.
She worked for AT&T as an operator, and later as a teacher’s assistant in the special needs program of Milton public schools. She also did volunteer work as a therapist for special needs children.
Later in life, she and her husband retired to Quincy and wintered in Naples, Fla.
She was the president of the Quincy West Condominium Association, as well as the Pineland Club Condominium Association in Naples.
A devout Catholic, she was a member of the Legion of Mary, a Eucharistic minister at St. Agatha Parish, as well as an extraordinary minister to the homebound and infirmed.
She is survived by her husband, William J. Tierney; her children, Kathleen M. Tierney, of Walpole, Jean Marie Whelan, of South Boston, Thomas E. Tierney, of Mendon, William J. Tierney Jr., of Milton, and James M. Tierney, of Duxbury; her grandchildren, Christopher Follen, Michael Follen, Matthew Follen, Lily Whelan, William Whelan, Daniel Whelan, Mary Rose Whelan, Sarah Tierney, Catherine Tierney, Katelyn Tierney, Jacqueline Tierney, Rachel Tierney, Siobhan Tierney and James Tierney; and her sister, Rose Hanley, of Brockton.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Agatha Church on Nov. 23.
