Mary L. Cooney

Mary L. (Sullivan) Cooney, 78, died Aug. 15 while traveling in Ireland.

Born at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Boston, she lived in Roxbury during her childhood and moved to Roslindale, where she graduated from Roslindale High School, in 1949. She married the late Austin F. Cooney, also of Roslindale, in 1951. They raised 10 children together, first living in Roslindale, and then moving to Sherborn.

In 1962 they moved their young family to Japan, where Mr. Cooney was a civil engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers. The two youngest children were born in Japan. Although she spoke no Japanese and knew nothing of the culture before her arrival, Mrs. Cooney adapted, made friends, learned about the culture and taught English to college students in her home. Returning to the United States in 1970, the family lived in Marshfield before settling in Milton in 1972.

Mrs. Cooney was an active member of St. Elizabeth Parish for the past 38 years. She attended daily Mass and contributed to the parish as a Eucharistic minister, a religious education teacher, and a member of numerous committees and activities.

A seamstress who made clothes for her own family, she taught sewing during the 1970s at Singer Sewing in Quincy. She also taught sewing from her home.

She is survived by her children, Michael Cooney and his wife, Setsuko, of Manazuru, Japan, Kathleen Cooney, of Wakefield, Kevin Cooney and his wife, Maureen, of Spring Lake, N.J., Patricia Nadeau and her husband, James, of Jamestown, R.I., Maureen Hill and her husband, David, of Bow, N.H., Ellen Strunk and her husband, Robert, of Milton, Jeanne Navoni and her husband, Thomas, of Mansfield, Jacqueline Presswood, of Upton, Robert Cooney and his wife, Marietta, of Plymouth, and Colleen Cooney, of Milton; her siblings, James Sullivan and his wife, Beth, of Westwood, Gerard Sullivan and his wife, Virginia, of Walpole, Rose Greene and her husband, George, of Shrewsbury, and Claire Emanuelli and her husband, Charles, of Natick; 24 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
