Born in Somerville, she grew up in South Boston. She was a graduate of St. Augustine High School and Boston Business School.

She resided in Braintree for 50 years and was an administrator for the Braintree Council on Aging before her retirement in 2000.

Mrs. Sweeney was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by her husband, James J. Sweeney; her children, Maryann Mayer, of Wareham, Elaine Johnson, of South Carolina, Dianne Uhlman and her husband, Daniel, of Norwell, George J. Sweeney and his wife, Anita, of Italy, and James P. Sweeney and his wife, Jessica, of Amsterdam; her siblings, Catherine Nabstedt, of Eastham, Denise Keliipio, of Hawaii, Patrick J. Shea, of Dorchester, and John Shea, of Quincy; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late James Shea.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Braintree, on Nov. 7. Burial was in National Cemetery, Bourne.
