Msgr. Thomas F. Finnegan

Msgr. Thomas F. Finnegan, 91, of Falmouth, formerly of Brighton and Milton, died Feb. 16.

The son of the late Thomas J. Finnegan and Agnes C. (Barry ) Finnegan, he was the former pastor of St. Elizabeth Church.

Msgr. Finnegan was educated in his home parish of St. Columbkille in Brighton. He graduated from Boston College in 1941 and attended Boston College Law School before entering the Army during World War II.

During his military service, he fought in the Battle of the Ardennes. Upon discharge from the Army, he entered St. John’s Seminary in Brighton and was ordained in 1951.

After serving at St. Mary Church in Chelmsford and St. Joseph Church in Boston, he was assigned to the Chancery Office where he was the assistant chancellor (1955 to 1961), vice chancellor (1961 to 1968) and chancellor (1968 to 1973), serving under both Richard Cardinal Cushing and Humberto Cardinal Medeiros.

He served as pastor of St. Elizabeth from 1973 to 1994 before retiring to Cape Cod, where he assisted at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in North Falmouth from 1994 to 2000.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on Feb. 21. Burial was Feb. 22 in the National Cemetery, Bourne.
