Pauline “Polly” (Sondergelt) Walsh, 96, died June 3 in Quincy.
Born in Springfield, Ohio, she moved east and joined the Coast Guard in 1944. It was then that she met and subsequently married Gerald Walsh.
After living in Quincy, the couple settled in Milton, where Mrs. Walsh spent the rest of her life. Her husband preceded her in death.
She was an avid traveler, having spent significant time in Italy, Spain and Central America, as well as Denmark, Ireland and England. She was fluent in Spanish and a self-taught expert on the Spanish Civil War, as well as early Christianity.
She is survived by her sister, Cathryn Gibbons, of Springfield, Ohio; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert “Betty” Sondergelt, also of Springfield; her nieces, Diane Sondergelt of Worthington, Ohio, Cindy Bloch and her husband, Tom, of Georgetown, Ky., and Sue Sondergelt, of Florida; and many friends.
A memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Burial was private.
