Rita G. (Callanan) O’Connor, of Milton, died at Milton Hospital on Aug. 7 after a period of failing health.

Born in Boston, she was a graduate of Jeremiah Burke High School and Bryant & Stratton Business School.

Mrs. O’Connor worked for the Internal Revenue Service for four years until her marriage to John J. O’Connor Jr. in 1944. She worked as a clerk for the Department of Public Works from 1969 to 1970.

She was active with many organizations in Milton, including the Council of Aging, Milton Senior Citizens, Catholic Daughters of America and Cunningham Bowling League, and was the first president of the St. Agatha Bowling League.

A resident of Milton for more than 34 years, she moved to Leisurewoods in Rockland for nine years before returning to Milton in 2001.

Wife of the late John J. O’Connor Jr., she is survived by her children, Patricia M. Guerriero and her husband, Richard, of South Weymouth, John J. O’Connor and his wife, Dorothy, of Scituate, Kevin F. O’Connor and his wife, Bettyann, of Hull, Brian R. O’Connor and his wife, Johanna, of Marblehead, and Kathleen F. Murphy and her husband, David, of Reading; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and her turtle, Clyde.

She was the daughter of the late Eugene J. Callanan and Mary G. (Delahanty) Callanan.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Agatha Church on Aug. 11. Burial was private.
