Attorney Robert E. Barrett, 63, of Milton, died at home April 23 after a nine-year battle against cancer.
Born in Boston, he was a 1963 graduate of Boston College High School, a 1967 graduate of Boston College and a 1970 graduate of Boston College Law School.
He entered the Army Reserve in 1969 and retired in 2005 as a lieutenant colonel.
Mr. Barrett passed the Massachusetts Bar in 1970, was sworn-in in November 1970 and practiced as an assistant attorney general from 1970 to 1974. He began his own practice in l976 at Barrett and Barrett Law Offices on Adams Street.
A resident of Milton since 1973, he was past president of the Rotary Club of Milton; a member of the Milton Hoosic Club, where he won the Nye Cup; a member of Foxfire Golf Club in Naples, Fla.; a corporator of Milton Hospital; a member of the Weymouth Tennis Club; and a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. (Maguire) Barrett; his children, Barbara D. Daly and her husband, James, of Holliston, Robert J. Barrett and his wife, Marykathleen, of Charlestown, and John W. Barrett, of New Orleans; his grandchildren, Dawn M. Barrett, Jane Daly, Colin Daly, Aidan Daly and Maura Barrett; and his siblings, Phyllis M. Boulter, of Marblehead, William H. Barrett, of Holbrook, Claire Gross, of Hingham, and Paul Barrett, of Brockton.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on April 27. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
