Dr. Robert Vincent Dandrow Jr., 87, died Aug. 26.

Dr. Dandrow was born in Boston, attended local schools and was president of the class of 1942 at English High School.

As a pre-med student at Tufts University, he joined the V12 program and was later commissioned an ensign in the Navy at Columbia University. He was assigned to the USS Stoddard as a communications officer and was present in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the treaty with Japan on Aug. 15, 1945.

After completing his undergraduate courses at Tufts, he attended Tufts Medical School and graduated in the class of 1951. He completed a five-year (1951 to 1956) residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at the Boston City Hospital.

Dr. Dandrow was a founding Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Obstetrical Society of Boston, the American Fertility Society, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

He was an associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Tufts Medical School until his retirement in 2000. He also had teaching appointments at Boston University and Harvard University Schools of Medicine.

He was a visiting surgeon in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Margaret’s Hospital for Women, Boston, Boston Lying-in Hospital, Boston City Hospital, University Hospital, Carney Hospital and Faulkner Hospital. He was the former chief of gynecology at Milton Hospital and past president of the medical staff at St. Margaret’s Hospital.

He was involved in a number of significant research projects over the years. He was the clinical director and senior investigator of the U.S.P.H.S. Grant (Boston City Hospital and Boston Lying-in Hospital) for the Study of Abnormal Carbohydrate Metabolism in Pregnancy (1954 to 1969).

He was a lector at St. Elizabeth Church, a longtime member of the Neighborhood Club of Quincy, and a member of the Fuller Village Resident’s Association and Winmiir Residents Association.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary (Appleton) Dandrow; his sisters, Ruth Lovejoy, of Florida, and Joan Hottleman, of North Falmouth; his children, Robert V. Dandrow III and his wife, Cathy, of Marshfield, Patricia Dandrow-Seksay and her husband, Edward, of Cohasset, Alan Dandrow and his wife, Joyce, of Pembroke, Philip Dandrow and his wife, Patricia, of Cohasset, and Elizabeth Dodge and her husband, Stephen, of Pembroke; and 12 grandchildren.

He was the son of the late R. Vincent Dandrow and Ruth (Kelley) Dandrow, and brother of the late Gloria MacIsaac.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Sept. 2 in St. Elizabeth Church. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
