Ruth O’Toole Wickers

Ruth (Holland) O’Toole Wickers, a 23-year resident of Milton, died June 14 in Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center.

Born in Boston 90 years ago, she grew up in Dorchester and was educated in the Boston schools. Her first husband, Ensign John A. O’Toole, was killed during World War II.

Mrs. O’Toole Wickers graduated from St. Margaret School of Nursing and Boston College. She was employed as a hospital inspector for the Department of Public Health, retiring in the 1960s.

She met her second husband, the late Thomas J. Wickers Jr., a two-term mayor of Beverly, in Jamaica while on vacation with friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean A. Davis, of Milton; her grandchildren, Ann E. Davis, of Chelsea, and Carolyn Davis-Smith, of Rochester, N.H.; and her great-grandchildren, Avery Alexandra and Sawyer Edward Smith.

She was the sister of the late Alan F. Holland and Marjorie L. Delaney.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on June 17. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Boston.

Arrangements were by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.
