Thomas “Red” Garrity, 85, died at his home July 15.

Born and raised in Jamaica Plain, he lived in Dorchester prior to his move to Quincy 44 years ago.

A retired 45-year employee of Boston Gas Co., he was a former employee of Quirk Auto Auction in Quincy. He was a Veterans of Foreign Wars member, formerly of the Jamaica Plain Monuhills Post, and a member of Morrisette American Legion Post in Quincy.

He was a Sampson World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre.

Mr. Garrity enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, and crossword puzzles. He was fond of traveling with his family, especially to Ireland. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Noella Ann (Aylward) Garrity; his children, Kathleen T. Sweeney and her husband, Richard, of Scituate, Patricia M. Petersen and her husband, Michael, of Maine, James M. Garrity, of Quincy, and Maura I. Garrity, of San Francisco; his grandchildren, Ryan Sweeney, Kerin Sweeney and Emily Petersen; his sister, Patricia McCann, of West Roxbury; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Margaret Smith, Mary Garrity, James Garrity, John Garrity and Daniel Garrity.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Agatha Church on July 19. Burial was in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
