Walter F. Whelan, 87, of Weymouth, formerly of Dorchester and Falmouth, died at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford on Sept. 16.
Mr. Whelan was a retired Boston firefighter from Ladder 29, and a former 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus, Council #813.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Anne (Furey) Whelan; his children, Julianne W. Fitzgerald, of Milton, Christine M. Taylor, of Weymouth, Susan W. MacDonald, of Braintree, Joan Perry, of Tennessee, Walter F. Whelan, of California, and Mark S. Whelan, of Arizona; his siblings, Stephen Whelan, of East Bridgewater, and Mary Robertson, of Dorchester; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Sister Ann Whelan and Margaret Mullen, and the great-grandfather of the late Elizabeth Kulikowski.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church on Sept. 24. Burial was in the National Cemetery in Bourne.
