William J. McCarthy, 71, died Feb. 2 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Born in Boston and a graduate of Boston English High School, Mr. McCarthy was a 45-year resident of Quincy.
A member of Local #223 and a veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the Merchant Marines from 1966 to 1972 and was a member of the National Maritime Union of America, AFL-CIO.
He enjoyed riding his motorcycle.
He is survived by his wife, Mary F. (Kelly) McCarthy; his children, Stephen F. McCarthy and his wife, Denise, of Whitman, William “Billy” McCarthy III and his wife, Kate, of Holliston, Sharon J. McCarthy, of Holbrook, Brian P. McCarthy and his wife, Rose, of Quincy, Lisa M. Ash and Brendan Fisher, of Maryland, and Cameron McCarthy, of Quincy; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
A funeral service was held in the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home on Feb. 8. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.
