We All Need Community

4/2/09
The tragedy that rocked Milton last week has left many people with scars.
Some of those people who have pain in the aftermath of this event never even knew any of the members of the Revelus family. They are people who have watched the story play out on national television. They have read the details in the daily press.
Everyone who has heard the story has feelings – usually those feelings include anger, depression and sadness.
We have all lost something. We have lost our ability to think this community is an island, safe from all the violence that happens in Iraq or New York City.
Some of us will heal quickly. Some of us will have pain that will never disappear.
Our sympathy and concern goes out to the Revelus family. The grief they are living through is beyond our comprehension. Our prayers are with them.
Our thoughts and prayers also go out to the men and women of the Milton Police Department who are coping with what they have seen and heard and done as this situation played out.
The question remains: how do you move on after tragedy?
The answer is not simple. For many people the answer comes from connection. For some the answer is prayer.
Some people close down and withdraw in times of loss.
We all have our own coping mechanisms. Some work better than others.
Once again we have seen the community try to work together to deal with shared pain. We believe the strength of this community comes from its resilience.
We believe there are only two emotions – fear and love. The only hope any of us have is to concentrate on the love. To connect with each other. To look for ways of making the world a better place.
This is an amazing community. We cope. We move on.
