Title Town

3/26/09
If you’re a Milton sports fan, the past few weeks have been nothing short of exhilarating. Three state championships in a row, after all, is nothing to sneeze at.
Let’s start with the Bantam A hockey team that won its first state title March 1 with a 6-1 victory over Barnstable. The players’ victory, which took place in Newton, was a long-awaited treat, since the team was a perennial participant in the tournament but previously came up short prior to this year. Although high-school sports dominates our coverage, we would be remiss if we didn’t offer a sincere congratulations to the Bantams.
By now, of course, everyone knows about the Milton High boys’ basketball team and its convincing 81-44 victory over Hoosac Valley on March 14 in Worcester. Roy Chambers, who covers the team for the Times, had told me at the beginning of March that the team was special and could go all the way. While we gave them plenty of coverage in last week’s issue, we send additional kudos to coach Sean LoPresti and his Wildcats for winning the Division 2 state championship.
Finally, we’d like to say congratulations to another Division 2 champion, the Fontbonne Academy girls’ hockey team, for its 3-0 victory over Whitman-Hanson-Pembroke on March 15 at the TD Banknorth Garden. Coverage can be found elsewhere in this issue. Readers may note that they’re the only state champ that didn’t get a photo on front page. It’s not because we’re sexist; it’s because the team only has one player (senior Colleen Murphy) from Milton. Still, it seems appropriate that it was another hockey team that completed the hat trick of state titles.
One thing’s for sure: Those spring-sports teams that the good folks of Milton have been working so hard to save sure have some tough acts to follow.
