Whether there was something in the air or it was just good fortune, town runners had their mojo working at the Milton Road Race on June 8.
Sponsored by the Milton Junior Woman’s Club, the 33rd annual race saw many of Milton’s own finish in top positions in both the 5K and 10K races.
Sunny skies, a slight breeze and low humidity welcomed the 460 runners who competed on race day.
Athletes competing in the races took their mark at the starting line outside Cunningham Park. The starting horn blew and they were off, pacing the streets of town.
The anxious crowd gathered at the finish line waiting for the front-runners to appear. Milton’s Kevin Walsh was the first to arrive back, crossing the line at 19:13 to win the 5K race.
The fastest woman in the 5K was Milton’s Rebecca Padera, whose time of 20:29 was good enough to place her sixth overall.
Before long, it was time for the 10K runners to arrive back. Again, the town cheered on one of its own in seeing the top finisher arrive. Jason Cakouros was first, coming in at 34:54. Behind him were two other Milton runners. Justin Renz (35:57) came in second and Patrick Madden (38:10) was third. It was a family affair, as Cakouros’ wife Eileen was the top 10K female finisher. Her time was 43:22.
Milton runners also represented the age groups well. Nicholas Tsanotelis was first and Brian Devin second among men aged 50 to 59; Joe Scarbo was third among men aged 20 to 29; and Brendan Saur was first, Jon Maher second and Gordon Jarvis third among men aged 1 to 19.
Kathy Larson was first among women aged 60 to 69; Regina Tsanotelis was first, Rachel Shanor second and Jean Lamere third among women aged 50 to 59; Stephanie Hartwell was first, Ann Marie Boylan second and Rita Taugher third among women aged 40 to 49; Bridget Gaffney was first and Karen O’Sullivan third among women aged 30 to 39; and Evelyn Orlando was first, Courtney Peterson second and Catherine Lawton third among women aged 1 to 19.
Younger residents enjoyed the day with the children’s Fun Run, music, ice cream and a friendly cow mascot from Thatcher Farms.
The event was sponsored in part by Fruit Center Marketplace, The Toy Box, Thatcher Farms, Falconi Companies, Greater Boston Running Co., Church of Our Saviour, Fallon Ambulance, the Milton Police Department, Coldwell Banker, Abby Park, Blue Hills Brewery, Fitness Unlimited, Milton Academy, Milton DPW, Common Market and Corcoran Construction Corp.
