With summer coming to a close, Miltonians will now turn their attention to the approaching school year.
The Times won an honorable mention in the category of Best Feature Story (Non-daily Division, circulation 4,500 to 5,999) for Publisher Pat Desmond’s story “Kurt Ladner Tells His Story of Holocaust Survival,” which was published on March 27, 2008.
Desmond’s winning story and an excerpt from Ladner’s book appear on Page 19.
Full results from the contest have been posted online at www.nna.org. Winners will be recognized at the “Toast to the Winners” awards reception at the National Newspaper Association’s 123rd Annual Convention & Trade Show, to be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile, Ala.
Sharon DiMauro, publisher of the Fort Bragg (Calif.) Advocate-News and the Mendocino (Calif.) Beacon and chair of the Contests and Awards Committee, announced the contest winners.
There were 1,713 entries in the Better Newspaper Contest and 356 entries in the related Better Newspaper Advertising Contest for a total of 2,069. A total of 639 awards were won by 143 member newspapers in 42 states. California had the most wins with 93, followed by Texas (66) and New Mexico (52).
Winners will be recognized in a special contest insert in the October issue of Publishers’ Auxiliary. The judges’ comment on the Times’ entry: “Can’t wait for the book.”
Established in 1885, the National Newspaper Association is the largest newspaper association in the country.
