Blog Post:
My Mantra
—I’ll take care of it

A friend asked me recently “how’s business”? This type of question is usually generated more from custom than actual interest, but I answered the question honestly. I told her “business is pretty good”, and we moved on to other topics which both of us wanted to catch up with each other on. When I thought about my response later, I decided that the reason that my “business” as a practicing Massachusetts real estate attorney was in pretty decent shape was that I had, probably unconsciously, made the transition from competent attorney to a person who takes pride in solving problems for my clients, many times not strictly of a legal nature.

I have tried to become the person whom every time an issue arises in a transaction, I reassure all people concerned that “I will take care of it.” Many times all I need to do is draw upon my experiences from the past and inform people that there is a way to combine two condominium units into one. Certain plans are required, and sometimes lender consents are required, as well. But, “if you authorize me to complete the documentation “I will take care of it.”

Other times a listing agent will inform me that he has problems communicating with the buyer’s agent, for a buyer whom I represent. I tell him “I will take care of it” and speak to my client, and articulate the problem, and it is usually solved. Sometimes, buyers need names of artisans to give them an estimate on repairs, or describe the extent of the repair needs. Many years of practice, and membership in three BNI groups, has furnished me with quality referrals for almost any task, and I am able to “take care of it” through either making the contact, myself, or giving the inquiring person good information.

None of the statements made here are intended as “chest pounding”. And, as most of you know, always being the one to “take care of it” can sometimes put one in a position where others take advantage of you. On the other hand, it is my belief that if you get a reputation as being someone who can “take care of” almost any problem or situation, your stature in your community and workplace is enhanced and more people will want to work with you. That is certainly the position which I strive to attain each and every day.
