The Selectmen are scheduled to meet April 2 and 16. Mearn said the names will be released at one of those meetings.
He said the selection committee has held its meetings in executive session and the names cannot be made public until finalists are presented.
Chief Malcolm Larson, who has headed the Fire Department for five years, announced late last year he will retire effective June 30. In September, he announced a plan that would bring about his successor, including the formation of the five-person screening committee.
Included on the committee are the fire chiefs from Brockton, Westwood and Marshfield, as well as Warrant Committee member Steve Keel and Personnel Board member Michael Reardon.
The new chief will start work June 15. Larson plans to stay on two extra weeks to help with the transition.
