Discuss Plans

Temple Shalom leaders are planning a private meeting this month to address the congregation’s uncertain future.

According to Temple President Lynda Packer, the meeting will be an opportunity for synagogue members to discuss a next step after Town Meeting rejected a commercial zoning proposal Temple officials say would have allowed them to rebuild and remain on their property.

Packer declined to comment further on the details of the meeting, saying it is a private affair to discuss Temple business.

“As our plans progress, we will do our best to communicate with the community,” Packer said in an e-mail to the Times.

Meanwhile, Selectman Marion McEttrick said many residents hoping to see the Temple remain in Milton are willing to put in the time to find potential compromises. Many were opposed to the commercial option based upon fears it would negatively impact the neighborhood, although just as many felt that it would be an asset and enhancement to the quality of life.

“I think people are just waiting to see what the Temple is going to do next,” said McEttrick, who lives on Crown Street abutting the synagogue. She opposed the commercial zoning plan. “I think everyone is in agreement that we would like to see the Temple stay in Milton.”
