A combination of factors has freed up funds for the department and allowed the return to regular strength, according to Larson.
A vacancy in the 55-member department was recently filled, freeing up salary expenses since July. The new firefighter is at a lower pay rate than the firefighter whose position was filled.
Larson is counting on disabled firefighter Antonio Pickens receiving an early retirement that will also cut department expenses. An item on this fall’s Special Town Meeting warrant will petition the state to approve the measure.
The spring Town Meeting included an appropriation for police and fire department raises that was not included in the regular budget.
Larson has warned about the risk inherent in an understaffed department. Running with only two engines limits backup for firefighters responding to a blaze and the ability to respond to separate, simultaneous incidents. –NL
